SMART Case Planning

Case planning is such an important part of evidence-based practices, and yet we have only touched the surface when it comes to our ability to work with clients to create dynamic, useful, efficient and effective case plans. This hands-on workshop will give you an opportunity to understand how to create a solid working alliance with offenders that will lead to a comfortable case planning environment. It will inform regarding the importance of timing in case planning and when one should and shouldn’t do a case plan with a client. Finally, it will allow participants practice with the nuts and bolts of actual goal planning and how to make this process an integral part of the probation experience.

Upon completion of SMART Case Planning, participants will be able to:

1) Explain the psychology of preparing for change and the importance of practitioner awareness of this phenomenon with respect to individual clients.

2) Understand the importance of “preparing” for case planning and the importance of “timing”.

3) Recognize and demonstrate the use of autonomy and collaboration in the case planning process.

4) Target high-risk factors while also making the process client-centered.

5) Develop effective goals and action steps while avoiding typical goal-setting pitfalls.

6) Explain the difference between a case plan and “conditions of probation” and articulate how the two do intercede and compliment one another.

7) Utilize protective factors in developing goals with the client.
